2020 Juried Exhibition: Masters as Muses

Exhibition Overview –

Many artists can look back and find master artists who have provided inspiration for their style of execution or subject matter.  In “Masters as Muses” artists are challenged to include an image of a master artist’s creation in their application that has inspired their style of art or a specific subject matter. The idea is not to copy or re-create the master, but to re-invent. Here are some examples, but yours will be better:

  • Van Gogh’s “Potato Eaters” inspires you to re-invent a table of hungry eaters with today’s favorite food.

  • In photography, Muybridge’s study of motion may inspire a serial study of people or animals moving or Ray Metzker’s work may instigate a composite work of multiple, related images.

  • Robert Indiana’s LOVE sculpture may inspire you to use words in your 2-D or 3-D art.

  • Pissarro's snowy landscapes may offer a color palette for winter plein air painting inspiration.
